Summer in Breakish

bonfire and smores

probably the hottest Summer I can remember up here. Scorchio! Kids managed picnics, bike trips, swimming off Ashaig beach, kayak trips down to the end of Ardnish peninsula, late night bonfire with Smores (take 2 chocolate hobnobs and use them – chocolate inwards – to sandwich toasted marshmallows) at end of the garden, trips into Broadford for coffee and icecream. Went to the otter hide at Kylerhea – no luck spotting otters this time, although we did the last time we were here. Linked this in with visit to the Brightwater Visitor Centre in Kyleakin. This is 100th anniversary of Gavin Maxwell’s birth, so seemed appropriate to take a look. Would love one of the otter sculptures, but will have to save an awful lot of pennies! Forced ourselves to have an icecream in Kyle of Lochalsh. Amazing that both Kyle and Kyleakin are within 10 minutes of Oystercatchers and the otter hide is less than half an hour away. Found fossil ammonites on Ardnish at over 30cm circumference. Still managed to get several hours’ work out of No 1 son in the garden. Large shed delivered and put together where James and Bob had put down hard standing. Really smart looking. Got over to Portree for daughter to go riding – really friendly stables and loads of suggestions as to hacking, Pony Club, lessons etc. Had a great day out with the kayaks in the surf at Ashaig – Dad made the first capsize of the season, closely followed by daughter, who well and truly christened her new kayak, albeit rather wetly! Great fun though!
